Phil Spencer confirms Xbox is working on handheld console, but it won’t be out soon
Microsoft’s future in the industry may lie in the handheld market.
The head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, has occasionally let slip that a portable Xbox console is a possibility, but now it is a reality, as he stressed in an interview with Bloomberg: “The expectation is that we would do something,” said Spencer, who at the same time added that any device is a few years away.
In the short term, Xbox wants to focus on making its app work as well as possible on existing portable devices, but Phil Spencer himself stresses that in the “longer term, I love us building devices and I think our team could do some really innovative work, but we want to be informed by learning and what’s happening now.”
Xbox and his bet on the portable market
Phil Spencer does not highlight any front for Xbox and Microsoft, being the portable market a future reality in which they are already thinking and working. During his interview have also highlighted his statements about the fact that “I do not see sort of red lines in our portfolio that say ‘thou must not’”, referring to the fact that the games in its catalog continue to reach other ecosystems such as PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.
The handheld market is very healthy. Beyond mobile devices, a hybrid console like the Nintendo Switch is a historic success, and other handhelds like the Steam Deck and the like have followed, carving out an important niche in the market and becoming a daily gaming option for many gamers.
