Phil Spencer explains why Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and other former Xbox exclusives, will launch on PS5

Microsoft had already released Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Grounded, and Sea of Thieves on other consoles, and it seems like they don’t plan on stopping.

At the beginning of the year, Xbox had to put out the fires of a crisis arising from leaks. Some media and insiders published that the company was preparing a new strategy to launch their exclusives on competing platforms. After days of silence, Phil Spencer – head of Microsoft’s gaming division – confirmed that they would market four of their own games on platforms such as PS5 and Nintendo Switch, but that none of them would be Indiana Jones and the Great Circle or Starfield. But now, during the Opening Night Live show for Gamescom 2024, Xbox revealed that Indiana Jones is coming to PS5.

As such, Phil Spencer has come out to explain the situation: “Going to the PlayStation announcement, obviously, last spring, we launched four games — two of them on the Switch, four of them on PlayStation — and we said we were going to learn,” he said. We said we’d watch, I think at the showcase I might have said from our learning, we’re going to do more. What I see when I look is that our franchises are getting stronger, our Xbox console players are as high this year as they’ve ever been. So, I look at it and I say, ‘okay, our player numbers are going up for the console platform, our franchises are as strong as they’ve ever been… and we run a business.’”

The strategy is to continue launching games on PS5 and Nintendo consoles

With all that on the table, Phil Spencer has confirmed that moving Xbox exclusives to other consoles will be “a strategy” that they will take into account to achieve those goals. Furthermore, the manager has defended that important changes are taking place in the industry. “as an industry right now, there’s a lot of pressure on the industry. It’s been growing for a long time and now people are looking for ways to grow. And I think for us as fans and players of games, we just have to anticipate there’s going to be more change in how some of the traditional ways that games were built and distributed — that’s going to change for all of us. But the end result has to be better games that more people can play. If we’re not focussed on that, I think we’re focussed on the wrong things.”

In addition to Minecraft, which has been on all platforms for years, Xbox Games Studios released Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, Pentiment, and Sea of Thieves on other consoles. Next up will be Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which will be available on December 9 on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC, and Game Pass. The PS5 version will be out in spring.
