Phil Spencer reveals nothing is stopping the Xbox catalog from landing on PS5

Exclusives may be on their way out for good as Xbox boss Phil Spencer speaks about the limits of the Xbox catalog regarding on what platform it releases.

Xbox has had quite the year, with constant announcements that show how it is approaching its software strategy in an extremely different way as to what has been the usual. Earlier on in the year, we saw the arrival of former console exclusives to both PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, but as the months passed that small selection seems to be growing. Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, acknowledged that he is “satisfied with the results” and that there isn’t a “red line” around their game catalog.

“I do not see [...] red lines in our portfolio that say ‘thou must not’”, explains Spencer in an interview with Bloomberg. “It is too early to make any kind of decision about the next halo”. That Xbox after the agreement with Activision Blizzard which alludes to the more places to play, the better, is beginning to materialize firmly. The success of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is an example of this.

Chronology of a paradigm shift: Xbox 2024

February was when things began to shift for the future of Xbox as a major player in the video game industry. After weeks of rumors, the heads of the Microsoft gaming division hosted a special presentation in which they confirmed a change in strategy with an initial wave of four games to be released on competing platforms.

In that same month, they pointed out that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Starfield would continue to be exclusive, although they “did not rule out” their possible arrival on PS5. In August, under the spotlight at Gamescom 2024, Microsoft displayed a giant poster with its launch window in the competition: spring 2025, around six months after landing on Xbox Series and PC.
