Pirates of the Caribbean producer confirms both a reboot and a Margot Robbie movie are in development

Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer behind the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, has revealed that they’re working on two different projects that they hope to release in the future.

After years of rumors and guesses, it seems like Disney is finally moving forward with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. But there’s an unexpected surprise for fans: producer Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that there are two movies in development at the same time.

“It’s two different movies,” revealed Bruckheimer (via Entertainment Weekly). “We hope to get ‘em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too.” As it turns out, the teams behind the Pirates franchise have been actively working to get these movies under development, and now they’re both in the scriptwriting phase.

The first of these films will be a complete reboot of the franchise that Bruckheimer is producing alongside Jeff Nathanson (Young Woman and the Sea) writing the script. What’s more exciting is that the script seems to be going well. The producer stated that he “thinks [Nathanson] has cracked it. He’s got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second and then we’ll get there. But he wrote a great, great third act.”

While this movie is intended as a reboot, which means that it wouldn’t feature any of the original characters in the series, he still would like Johnny Depp to make an appearance in the new movie. “It’s a reboot, but if it was up to me, he would be in it,” he admitted. “I love him. He’s a good friend. He’s an amazing artist and he’s a unique look. He created Captain Jack. That was not on the page, that was him doing a little Pepé Le Pew and Keith Richards. That was his interpretation of Jack Sparrow.”

Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean film is also in development

The surprising fact about all of this is that Disney is also letting Bruckheimer work on a second Pirates film to release after the reboot: the long rumored Margot Robbie film. Previously, it was revealed that Robbie had pitched a female-led story, which at the time was not greenlit by Disney. However, it appears like the studio has changed their mind and have given Robbie and her team to go ahead with the project.

The original draft of said film was written by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey), although there is currently no confirmation of whether or not this is the story that will be developed, or if another script has been chosen for it.
