“PlayStation 5 Development Pizza Kit”: This is how a PlayStation 5 dev kit was sold on eBay

This anecdote from 2021 showed us that there are users on trading platforms with tremendous ingenuity who can take advantage of any situation.

The current generation of consoles will be remembered for many things, not the least of which was the lack of stock of both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox X Series X|S at launch. This led to all sorts of crazy posts on trading platforms, with one PS5 development kit even being sold as a “PizzaStation” due to its distinctive shape. This is the strange story of how one very clever eBay user managed to sell one of these kits for a small fortune.

The story of how a PS5 development kit was sold on eBay as “PizzaStation 5″

This event happened in September 2021. A user of the eBay buying and selling platform got his hands on a PS5 development kit and wanted to sell it by listing it as such for about $3,252, but failed to get any buyers.

Instead of giving up, he came up with a very odd idea: he decided to resubmit the publication at double the price, but surrounding the console with pizzas, calling it PizzaStation 5, and going so far as to include a homemade spatula with the PlayStation logo.

When the first official images of the PS5 Dev Kit were released, there were many jokes about its shape, with many claiming it was a pizza chef’s kitchen tool, using the triangular slot at the top to place or heat pizza slices.

And that is exactly what this seller tried; to make the meme a reality. And in the process, he pocketed a little over $6,500.

Since this sale took place, there has been much speculation as to the reason behind this curious decision. One of the theories that makes the most sense is that this is a way for the user to avoid getting into trouble with Sony, since PlayStation 5 development kits are produced in very limited quantities and it would be very easy for the company to “pull the thread” to check how he got his hands on it, as it could have been stolen.

This is a trick that will not fool anyone, but it would at least manage to bypass the filters or automatic systems that many buying and selling platforms have in place to detect possible fraud or items that may come from illicit activities.
