PlayStation 5 sales are starting to rival Sony’s own PS4 numbers

It seems like Sony’s PlayStation 5 is selling so well it’s actually competing against the PS4 in sales numbers, keeping pace and maybe on the path to surpassing it.

We knew that the PS5 was a resounding success, but we did not know the exact sales figures for the Sony machine. Now, thanks to an official announcement shared by the company itself, we finally know the number of consoles that have been sold in these three years. The figure is as rounded as it is surprising: 50 million PS5s have been sold. Furthermore, these are units sold to consumers, not distributed to businesses.

Now, the million dollar question: Will it be able to surpass the pace of PlayStation 4? Everything points to yes, since if the threshold of 40 million consoles was crossed with a difference of two months with respect to its predecessor, a single week has prevented PS5 from matching PS4′s 50 million in the same period of time. It’d be logical to think that in the next sales update we might see that Sony’s new machine is already selling at a higher rate.

The best-selling consoles in history

We do not know what the final figure for PS5 will be, although it seems that it will be high, since 50 million consoles sold in three years leads us to think that it will not have too many problems reaching 100 million in the coming years. What we do know with certainty is what the best-selling consoles in history currently are.

  • PS2 -155 million
  • Nintendo DS -154 million
  • Nintendo Switch - 132 million currently
  • Game Boy + Game Boy Color - 118.69 million
  • PS4 - 117.2 million
  • PSX – 102.49 million
  • Nintendo Wii - 101.63 million
  • PlayStation 3 - 87.4 million
  • Xbox 360 - 86 million
  • Game Boy Advance - 81.51 million

NOTE: We add “currently” and mark Nintendo Switch in bold because it is the only console on the list that has not ceased production. In fact,it is more alive than ever and their numbers are growing by leaps and bounds.
