PlayStation 5 sales spike in the U.S. after Sony raises console prices

The increase suggests consumers rushed to buy ahead of higher console prices.

Update:

In late March, Sony announced a global price increase for PlayStation 5 consoles. This move went against the usual trend in the second half of a console’s life cycle, when prices typically drop to maintain sales and make the hardware more accessible to those who previously couldn’t afford it. However, for the Japanese company, things haven’t turned out so badly.

According to reports from Circana, the retail tracking service, PlayStation 5 sales in the United States increased compared to 2026 figures during the week ending April 4. In the words of senior director Mat Piscatella, “U.S. spending on video game hardware for the week nearly doubled when compared to the same week a year ago,” he wrote on his Bluesky account. This suggests that people who were waiting for a price drop had to buy before the consoles became less affordable.

A Concerning Price Hike

These price increases have become quite prohibitive for some budgets, with the cheapest console, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, now costing $600, while the most expensive, the PlayStation 5 Pro, reaches $900, leaving the standard PlayStation 5 at $650. By comparison, at this point in the PlayStation 4’s lifecycle, its predecessor was already priced at just $200.

Sony blames the “global economic landscape” for this price hike, which, as VGC rightly points out, has caused the price of the cheapest console, the PlayStation 5 Digital, to rise by 50%. The current generation has faced problems with the supply of key components, starting with a shortage of microprocessors in 2020 due to the pandemic, and now an artificial increase in RAM prices driven by artificial intelligence.
