PlayStation confirms closure of Bluepoint Games, studio behind Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus remakes
Sony points to an increasingly challenging industry environment and shifting priorities.
Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed it will close Bluepoint Games next month. The Austin, Texas-based studio, which became a household name for its remakes, will see approximately 70 employees lose their jobs. According to a Sony spokesperson to Bloomberg, the decision follows a “recent business review” aimed at adapting to a shifting economic landscape within the sector.
Hermen Hulst, CEO of the Studio Business Group at PlayStation, addressed the closure in an internal memo, citing an “increasingly challenging industry environment.” Hulst pointed to rising development costs, slower growth, and changing player habits as the primary drivers for the decision. While PlayStation expressed deep gratitude for the studio’s “technical expertise” and “craftsmanship,” the reality is that one of Sony’s most consistent developers is being phased out.
A legacy of quality and cancelled ambitions
Bluepoint Games built its reputation on breathe-taking technical feats. Since its acquisition in 2021, the team was celebrated for the 2020 PS5 remake of Demon’s Souls, a title that remains a visual benchmark for the current generation. Their portfolio includes legendary work on the Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Shadow of the Colossus, and the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection.

However, the studio’s trajectory shifted when Sony pivoted toward live-service titles. Reports indicate that Bluepoint had been developing a live-service God of War project, which was ultimately cancelled in early 2025. Despite initial promises from Sony that the studio was safe following that cancellation, the recent business review concluded otherwise. While PlayStation is reportedly looking for opportunities to move some staff to other internal teams, the closure marks the end of an era for a studio that many felt was the perfect candidate for future remakes.
