PlayStation

PlayStation’s creator keeps this treasure that they created together with Nintendo and never came out

200 Nintendo PlayStation prototypes were manufactured and only one was believed to have survived.

Nintendo PlayStation

It was the era of the 16-bit consoles. Super Nintendo and MegaDrive were competing for a market that until then had been totally dominated by the Kyoto-based company. During those years, Mario allied with Sony to design their next console, the Nintendo PlayStation. However, the agreement broke down, Nintendo discarded the CD-ROM format and PlayStation opted to launch its own console, which ended up sweeping Nintendo 64. It is believed that some 200 prototypes of the console that never was were produced and the surprise is that Ken Kutaragi, father of PlayStation, has one in his house.

This has been revealed by photographer Julian Domanski, who has been able to visit the former executive of the Japanese company. Although the tweets have already been deleted, the screenshots that prove it have appeared on the network. “I never thought I would see something so rare, but today I was able to touch a Nintendo PlayStation. The last one in existence was believed to have been sold at auction for $300,00, but it turns out the former Sony boss has one in his closet. Ken Kutaragi, great guy.

A myth come true

According to the auction website referenced by Domanski, “At one time, the existence of this prototype manufactured by two brands was simply a myth, and this is the first time it has been offered at public auction. It is said to be the last prototype of the 200 that were supposedly created.” The prototype features a CD-ROM drive, but also has a slot for NES and SNES cartridges. The console that was auctioned had to be repaired, as the CD-ROM drive no longer worked. The controller was very similar to the Super Nintendo controller, although the PlayStation name appears on the front.
