Pokémon Champions now has a release date and surprises fans with new Mega Abilities
The Nintendo Switch adds another major Pokémon title to its lineup in 2026.
2026 is turning out to be a wild year for Pokémon fans. The recently released Pokopia has exceeded all expectations by bringing the franchise into the Dragon Quest Builders style. We got our fill of nostalgia with the re-release of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, and we’re already looking ahead to the future with the 10th generation on the horizon. However, Pokémon Champions is joining the lineup as a new stop for fans. You can check out an introduction to its mechanics in the video at the top of this article.
The Pokémon Company has announced that Pokémon Champions will launch as a free-to-play game on April 8 for the Nintendo Switch. Although there won’t be a dedicated app for its successor, the Nintendo Switch 2 will receive an update to allow for higher-quality graphics, though the exact extent of the improvement has not been specified.
Its free-to-play format will let you play without any content restrictions. On the first day, a bundle of perks will go on sale to enhance the experience for those who want it.
The Megas are coming with new abilities
The Mega Evolution mechanic will be available at the game’s launch. The Pokémon Company has confirmed that these Pokémon will receive new abilities never before seen in the series.

Mega-Meganium will have Mega Sol, which allows it to use its moves with the same results as if it were in direct sunlight. Mega Emboar, on the other hand, gains Mold Breaker, which lets it ignore all of its opponent’s abilities when using moves. Last but not least is Dragonize, from Mega Feraligatr. Thanks to this ability, it will convert Normal-type moves into Dragon-type moves and also increase their power by 20%.
