Pokémon GO is about to introduce a new in-game item, which could be one of the best quality-of-life updates yet. Players in some regions have begun reporting that the “Explorer Gadget”—an item that was first discovered through data mining in late March—is now appearing in the game.

The Explorer Gadget is still in beta testing

One thing that stands out is that this item’s functionality varies from player to player. The description states that the item “automatically throws PokéBalls and spins PokéStops when Pokémon Go is closed. You can use it once daily.” However, for some players, it only allows them to spin and catch 10 attempts, while for others, this number increases to 70. Some players suggest that this is due to the type of account, or that these might even be random test values set by the developer.

The Explorer Gadget serves the same purpose as the Go Plus devices in real life, which, when connected to the user’s smartphone, allow you to spin PokéStops and throw PokéBalls to try to catch Pokémon you encounter along the way. An extremely useful item when you’re on the go, as well as during events like Community Day. The Pokémon GO Plus+ can even be used to track sleep in Pokémon Sleep, adding a bonus to your partner in Pokémon GO.

So far, Niantic has not released any official details about this item, which has received positive feedback from players who have tested it. Although the Explorer Gadget is not currently available as a paid item within the game, players are wondering whether they will have to use the coveted PokéCoins to obtain it. Given that several in-game items are available for purchase, it’s understandable that players would expect such a premium, helpful item to be sold at a high price.
