A couple of weeks ago, the death of James Carter Cathcart was reported. He was the voice of many anime characters, but he had a closer connection to Pokémon. In the anime, he participated in more than 700 episodes, voicing characters such as Professor Oak, James, and Meowth. Fifteen days after the announcement of his death, Pokémon took to social media to pay a heartfelt tribute to the actor and the great moments of his appearance in the series.

Along with the video, the official Pokémon account on X wrote, “In addition to his voice work, James provided over 700 episodes of scripts for the animated series, shaping the stories that defined generations of fans. From the very first episode to the final journeys, James brought warmth, humor, and unforgettable charm to the world of Pokémon. His talent gave life to some of our most beloved characters, and his legacy will continue to reach the hearts of Trainers everywhere.”

James Carter Cathcart, farewell to a legend

James Carter Cathcart passed away on July 10 at the age of 71 due to complications from throat cancer. His death was confirmed by voice actress confirmed by voice actress Erica Schroeder. His wife,Martha Jacobi, had reported in January 2023 about the advanced stage of throat cancer he was facing. Following the diagnosis, Cathcart decided to end his participation in the anime at the end of season 25, Pokémon Ultimate Journeys.

Beyond Pokémon, Cathcart made a notable mark in other anime productions. He was the English voice of Weevil Underwood in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters and also participated in series such as Revolutionary Girl Utena (as Miki Kaoru), Tokyo Mew Mew (Cyniclons Tarb), The Slayers (Dilgear), Alien Nine (Kumi’s Borg) and Kirby: Right Back at Ya! (Sir Gallant).
