Producers of One Piece (Netflix) expect to make six seasons
With a Season 2 confirmed, the showrunners are already thinking about the long-term future of the series.
The live-action series of “One Piece” on Netflix has certainly taken off with fans, and critics already consider it one of the best adaptations of an anime. This, along with the enormous longevity of the franchise, both on television and in manga, suggests that this production would be equally long-lived, an intention confirmed by its producers.
How many seasons will One Piece have?
The answer from one of them, Marty Adelstein, is clear and concise. “We have hopes for 12 seasons, there’s so much material,” he told Deadline.
“We’re over 1,080 chapters at this point in the manga,” adds Becky Clements, also a producer. “We have plans with Matt Owens (showrunner) for how we would break multiple seasons, and I think even if we did six seasons, we would probably only use up half of the chapters of the manga. It really could go on and on and on.”
As mentioned, the manga is extremely old. It debuted in 1997, in the magazine Shonen Jump, and has been running ever since. The anime, for its part, premiered in Japan 2 years later, in 1999, and has aired no less than 1,072 episodes, as well as 13 specials and 15 movies.
“We’ve definitely had more thorough conversations about what we would do with Season 2 should we have the opportunity, and then less extensive conversations about where we would go for season three to six,” Clements continues. “The one thing I would say, we’re all unified in the parts of the manga that you just absolutely cannot eliminate, and that’s our guiding principle, the stories that we know and the characters that we know are important to the fans.”
After the mysterious introduction of a villain at the end of the first season, which is now available in full on Netflix, fans are eager to see what Season 2 has in store. A Season 2 that, by the way, has yet to be confirmed.
