Project Hail Mary heads to Prime Video this July after theatrical success, and it’s closer than you imagine
The Andy Weir adaptation starring Ryan Gosling continues its momentum on streaming.
‘Project Hail Mary,’ one of this year’s most interesting movie releases, has been available to stream on MGM+ for a few weeks now. But for those who aren’t familiar with the platform or don’t have a subscription, Prime Video confirmed this morning the date the movie will be available on its streaming service.
The announcement was revealed on social media with a video of Rocky looking at a cell phone, announcing that the movie will be available on the platform this Friday, July 3, and asking, “Who are you watching with, question?” At the same time, a clip from the movie was posted on Prime Video’s official YouTube channel.
An original sci-fi success in a sequel-heavy market
‘Project Hail Mary’ centers on Ryland Grace, portrayed by Ryan Gosling, a former molecular biologist who awakens alone aboard a spacecraft with no memory of how he arrived there. As his memories gradually resurface, Grace discovers he is part of a last-ditch mission to stop an extinction-level event threatening Earth. Much of the film’s first half relies on Gosling’s isolated performance, using silence, routine, and discovery to build tension before the narrative expands with the introduction of Rocky—an engineer from another star system confronting a similar planetary crisis.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, ‘Project Hail Mary’ has emerged as a rare theatrical success in a marketplace dominated by sequels and long-established intellectual properties. The film currently ranks third at both the domestic and global box office for the year—an uncommon achievement for a standalone science-fiction adaptation.

Critical reception has emphasized the film’s balance between fidelity to the source material by Andy Weir and accessibility for audiences unfamiliar with the novel. Rather than leaning exclusively on large-scale spectacle, the adaptation prioritizes character development and methodical scientific problem-solving, allowing its high-concept premise to unfold at a measured, engaging pace.
