PUBG Publisher Rescues Tango Gameworks and Acquires HI-FI Rush Rights

Krafton announces that they will work with Xbox and Bethesda to ensure the continuity of the studio in its new phase.

The news came as a cold shower. Last May, Microsoft abruptly announced the closure of Tango Gameworks, one of Bethesda Game Studios’ Japanese development studios. The creators of The Evil Within, Ghostwire Tokyo, and HI-FI Rush continued to work until June, when the office lights went out for good? or so we all thought. The surprise came from Krafton, the South Korean publisher that owns PUBG Studios, which announced an agreement to acquire the studio as well as the intellectual property of HI-FI Rush.

“KRAFTON, Inc. today welcomed the talented people of Tango Gameworks to their team, marking a exciting moment in the company’s global expansion and its first significant investment in the Japanese video game market,” the publisher said. According to Krafton, “this strategic move will include the rights to Tango Gameworks’ acclaimed IP, Hi-Fi RUSH.”

HI-FI Rush and other projects

The company also stated that it will work with Xbox and ZeniMax Media to “ensure a smooth transition” and “maintain continuity at Tango Gameworks. The company will continue to work on Hi-Fi Rush and other future projects. However, they do not clarify whether they are taking the rights to The Evil Within and Ghostwire Tokyo, whose future sequels have been in the minds of the developers. “KRAFTON intends to support the Tango Gameworks team to continue its commitment to innovation and delivering fresh and exciting experiences for fans.”

The acquisition will not change the status of previous projects released under the Bethesda Game Studios umbrella. This means that the two installments of The Evil Within, Ghostwire Tokyo and HI-FI Rush will remain available on the same platforms. In addition to Tango Gameworks, Microsoft has also shut down Arkane Austin, co-creators of Dishonored 2 and responsible for Prey and Redfall.
