Qualcomm reportedly is looking to acquire Intel, even approaching them about it

Recent reports seem to point towards Qualcomm having approached Intel about a possible takeover of the entire chip manufacturer, heating up the processor wars.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, in the past few days Intel has been approached by competitor Qualcomm about the possibility of a complete takeover. The sources state that any deal is “far from certain,” but it would be a huge setback for a company that had been the most valuable chip company in the world for years, thanks in large part to its x86 processor technology, which had defeated Qualcomm’s Arm chips.

At the moment, Qualcomm is currently in an extremely strong position after years of dominating the mobile processor market. The company only recently re/entered the bigger line of processors used on larger computers as part of Microsoft’s lean into integrating AI into its software. This single move has placed Qualcomm neck to neck with both Intel and AMD, although the former has found itself in trouble after many budget cuts, layoffs, and a worryingly massive flaw in its most recent products that has seen them degrading and impacting users worldwide in the hardware level, with no action to fix any of the issues they themselve seem to have been aware of.

Could Qualcomm replace Intel in the eternal competition with PS6?

After its many setbacks, the fact that Qualcomm seems intent on taking over Intel and its operations would be a massive shakeup for an industry that has been steadily going strong due to the very direct competition of “team blue” and “team red”. It was recently revealed that AMD has won a contract with Sony to deliver the chips for their future console, the PS6, which was very much a victory over Intel.

The Reuters report highlights one element that will be part of the PS6′s structure: backwards compatibility. For PlayStation, offering the catalog of the company’s previous consoles is key to the future of its new console. Media sources indicate that this was one of the topics that the brand discussed with Intel engineers and executives. If so, Intel’s investment to make it possible would be greater than that of its main rival. Logical, considering that PS5 mounts a chip customized by AMD, so the move to another of the same company would be a sweet transition in technical terms.
