Update:

In the world of video games, there are all kinds of studios, from those that adapt to creating titles that fit with what they want to work on, to those who become true experts in their genre. The case of French studio Quantic Dream has always been clear, as experts in highly interactive and narrative-driven titles, where our actions gradually shape the ending. But what happens when there is a change and they decide to go down a completely different path? On this occasion, the studio has announced Spellcasters Chronicles, its first multiplayer title, which will have a closed beta in 2025.

Through a closed presentation to the media, we learned a little more about what the creators of titles such as Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy and Detroit: Become Human have in store.

Magical 3v3 battles with total freedom

Spellcasters Chronicles is designed as a free-to-play, team-based multiplayer game very similar to a MOBA, where we are placed in impressive, enormous arenas that also feature a lot of verticality. Each match is designed to be fast-paced and last around 25 minutes, where teams have to work together to capture enemy territories by recovering altars and ultimately destroying their opponents’ Lifestones.

Each player will take on the role of a Spellcaster, each with their own identity and defined role in combat (Support, Tank, or Damage). The game will launch with Spellcasters inspired by different cultures and visions of magic, each with a distinct playstyle. Within the game’s story, the world has been left without gods, and mortals are in control of their destiny. That’s where the spellcasters come in, powerful beings who can create miracles and change the world, but now they are fighting to take control and decide who is the most powerful and influential.

The game has the unique feature of following the player from behind instead of a top-down view. This, combined with the characters’ freedom to fly across the map, adds a new layer of strategy, placing them, in the words of their developers, “at the heart of the battlefield.”

Another interesting twist in the game is that, beyond working with powers you gain as you level up, you play through a card system. No matter which archetype you choose, players can choose from 50 spells and summons to create their own decks. But what’s behind this magic? With it, we can summon creatures to occupy areas in the arena, ranging from small minions and other beings with elemental powers to Titans, which are colossal and powerful creatures chosen by the team that help turn the tide on the battlefield, both in attack and defense. We can even summon buildings to support us during attacks. What’s more, the aim is for players to be able to adapt their own strategy, allowing them to change the environment in the arena, such as using magic to burn down a forest and prevent enemy creatures from advancing.

Game as a service and first beta

Although a formal launch is still some way off, Quantic Dream already has some details about this game planned. As a free-to-play title, Spellcasters Chronicles will have a monetization system focused on cosmetics and battle passes. The studio wants to avoid the game becoming a pay-to-win model, so there won’t be any gameplay elements behind a paywall. Along with this, the studio plans frequent updates that include new characters, spells, creatures, and arenas.

For now, players can register for a closed beta and join the game’s Discord server to get first-hand information throughout the development process. Those interested can also learn more about the game during the presentation at TwitchCon San Diego from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Pacific Time and get a key for the closed beta.
