The director of ‘Pulp Fiction’ and ‘Kill Bill’ is full of praise for the cinematographic quality and the plot of this original work of the streaming platform.

Gambito de dama Netflix Quentin Tarantino

When the famous filmmaker Quentin Tarantino talks, everyone else listens. And it is not very common for the director of films like ‘Pulp Fiction’, ‘Django Unchained’, ‘Once upon a time in... Hollywood’ or ‘Kill Bill’ shares his cinephile tastes, although from time to time he leaves us the most stimulating pills so that the rest of us can enjoy his favorite movies and series. This is the case of one of his latest recommendations, one of Netflix’s most successful miniseries about chess and inner torments: ‘Queen’s Gambit,’ which he describes as “a seven-hour movie.

Tarantino loves Netflix’s ‘Queen’s Gambit’

So acknowledged the filmmaker on The Rewatchables podcast, praising the exceptional plot construction of ‘Queen’s Gambit’: “It’s one of the most cinematic series I’ve ever seen. Everything works, from the pacing to the framing. It’s essentially one long movie in seven parts,” Tarantino assures.

Netflix’s ‘Queen’s Gambit’ tells the story of Beth Harmon, a 1960s orphan who becomes a world chess prodigy. Though the young protagonist must also deal with her addictions and traumas as she battles her way through tough opponents in the most prestigious international tournaments, all of which are dominated by men. With huge ratings, ‘Queen’s Gambit’ has been internationally acclaimed.

In one way or another, ‘Queen’s Gambit’ fits perfectly with Tarantino’s cinematic personality, both for its script and its staging, with a single protagonist who develops her personality through powerful narrative resources. The life of Beth Harmon, the character played by Anya Taylor-Joy, seems to be written by Tarantino himself: a character who succumbs to addictions such as alcohol, pills and obsessions, falling into a spiral of self-destruction. An internal struggle that is embodied in his obsessive control over chess.
