Redmagic 9S Pro, a gaming smartphone that surpasses itself

The power of a top-of-the-line smartphone is pushed to the limit and dedicated to gaming.

Just when we thought we had seen it all in gaming smartphones with the Redmagic 9 Pro, Nubia Technology has surprised the world with the new Redmagic 9S Pro, a device that seeks to surpass its predecessor by breaking the established benchmarks. After several weeks of use, we give you our final impressions after analyzing this gamer-focused terminal.

Cameras that deliver

This device features a 50-megapixel rear camera with a Samsung GN 5 sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS), a 7P anti-reflective lens, and a 50-megapixel Samsung JN1 ultra wide-angle camera with an optimized distortion correction algorithm,

Photography Methodology

As with all of our top-of-the-line products, the photos we took were taken with autofocus to see the shutter speed and performance of the equipment in different lighting scenarios.

In close-up shots, colors have improved from the previous model, and the bokeh effect has been enhanced.

In low-light photography, color rendition and shutter speed have also improved considerably.

Shooting at 10x maximum zoom is still a problem, as it produces images with blown pixels.

In natural backlighting conditions, we have very good performance, but we do notice some reflections on the lens.

The selfie camera still lacks good quality, as it even presents strange flashes, although it has presented improvements as the screen material has improved transparency, which is translated in the photos of this camera.

Its software, like that of the Redmagic 9S Pro, integrates functions such as the capture of star trails, starry skies, a larger electronic aperture, the creation of physiograms, slow-motion at 120 or 240 fps, time-lapse, wide angle, document scanning, identity photos, panoramic photos, clones, multiple exposures, night mode, portrait, expert mode and an effects factory with different modes and their variants.

Video can be recorded in 720, 1080, and 4K at 30 or 60 FPS, as well as 8K at 30 FPS. It is important to note that it is still not stabilized and only supports H.264, H265, and HDR10 formats.

Display

Its 6.8-inch BOE Q9+ with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, a resolution of 2480 x 1116, and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz with a touch sampling rate of up to 960 Hz as well as an instant touch sampling rate of 2,000 Hz makes wonderful use of the 93.7% screen-to-body aspect ratio and gives a maximum brightness of 1600 nits. One of the differences is that it has blue light reduction certification to protect the eyes.

On this screen, you can view content with HDR on Prime Video and Max, and up to 2160 at 60 FPS on YouTube. Disney+ can be viewed in HD.

It also integrates a customization menu to choose the refresh rate of the screen, which we can leave in automatic mode at 60, 90 or 120 Hz and let us know which we are using in the status bar like the previous model. The color can be adjusted in 3 modes: Colorful, Standard or Soft, as well as changing the temperature in 3 levels, cozy, normal or cool.

Performance

The Redmagic 9S Pro per is undoubtedly the most powerful to date, and its structure helps to get more out of it, its heatsink helps to maintain the CPU temperature, although we must admit that when we take it to the extreme we do notice some heat.

The device we tested has 16 GB of RAM (LPDDR5X+UFS4.0) and 512 GB of internal storage, although in our region there are two other models with 12GB + 256GB.

We had no problems with multitasking, and unlike its predecessor, we were able to push it to the limit. When we did the test we always do, playing Fortnite with the highest settings and doing a live stream from Twitch, it gave us an average of 90 PFS, something we hadn’t achieved with any other rig.

Games like Zenless Zone Zero, Call of Duty: Mobile, or Diablo Immortal ran over 60 FPS without much trouble.

Apps such as Alexa, Furbo, Google Assistant, Philips Hue, Hue Sync, Ring, and syncing with headphones such as the WH-1000XM5 or Sonos Ace presented no hiccups. Interacting with LG Smart TVs with WebOs or a Hisense Laser 4K L9G also worked without a hitch.

The dedicated button to enter gaming mode and the customization level, where you can control the audio, heat sink and performance itself, remain.

Audio

This section is literally a carbon copy of the previous one with its two 1115K speakers, 5 magnetic sound units, three microphones, DTS: X ULTRA sound, 3.5mm port, and Snapdragon Sound.

Audio Rating: 9

Battery

This smartphone has a 6500mAh dual cell battery with fast charging compatible with 80W, which can give you more than a day of normal use, although it is designed for demanding use, as it maintains the cooling of the device by means of the heatsink when connected to the current. It is important to note that wireless charging is still missing.

They have also given continuity to the software to optimize the use of the battery with managers that identify which applications or hardware is draining the energy and thus be able to manually modify what we want or if necessary activate or deactivate the turbo charge.

Battery rating: 9

Peripherals

The box of this smartphone comes with an 80W fast charger, the tool to eject the SIM and a transparent protective case that really protects little and scratches very easily. It still keeps its customizable buttons to improve the experience with some video games like shooters.

The case is still colorful with all the style a gamer can look for.

Design

The Redmagic 9s Pro maintains the square-edge line with a strutted arrangement of the cameras so we don’t get in the way when we play.

The RGB details won’t give us more FPS, but they are always appreciated. The heat sink is a fact that plays an important role in keeping the processor at bay and has a linear motor that has increased vibration by 38%.

This model is available in 4 different colors: Snowfall (16 GB of RAM + 512 memory), Sleet (12 GB of RAM + 256 memory), Cyclone (16 GB of RAM + 512 memory) and Frost (12 GB of RAM + 256 memory), which all look spectacular and to touch really give the feeling of a robust team, without neglecting the spectacular effect caused by turning on the gamer mode button.

Its 229 grams dimensions of 163.98 x 76. x 9.47 mm give a slight increase in size in depth, which explains the changes they made to its 10-layer ICE 13.5 cooling system with the largest vapor chamber of 10182 mm², which boasts of keeping the CPU at 25°C and that this translates into better performance.

It has Bluetooth 5.2, NFC and USB-C 3.2 with HDMI projection capability. It is important to note that it is not a waterproof and dustproof device.

Design Rating: 9.5

Operating System

This device comes with REDMAGIC OS 9.55 on Android 14 and adds the personal assistant Mora, this can be useful to give you a go to your streamings from the smartphone or even on a PC.

A new addition in the gaming section is that there is a function where we can cut a part of the screen and place it where we want, this can be very functional in some games where we are complicated for example the map. You can also improve the accuracy and sensitivity of the screen, change the perspective of a game from horizontal to vertical, although the game does not have it by default by its native aspect ratio, a function to optimize the download of resources, another to have an overview of the time we have played each title in the day, functions to take screenshots and make annotations on the fly, custom alarms per game so you do not forget scheduled games and an improvement in the projection of wireless images that allows projection at 120 FPS if the receiving monitor supports it.

Undoubtedly, this is the section that has improved the most, because although it maintains the levels of customization of the previous model, such as shortcuts, and network values, as well as the integration of services such as Xbox, Steam, PlayStation, and Epic, if we add to this the fact that we can connect a keyboard and a mouse, we are faced with a super terminal that can even take advantage of services such as Ge Force Now.

It is noteworthy that throughout the analysis we did not have any problems with crashes or unexpected closures.

Operating System Rating: 10

Conclusion

Redmagic 9s Pro is the ultimate smartphone for gaming that far surpasses anything we've seen in 2024, as hardly any will be able to come close to its performance and software dedicated to video games. The camera, although they have improved it a little, is still a little far from its competitors, but the screen, sound, and dedicated buttons make us soon forget that. However, its design, RGB, vibration system, and features are the best for those who are looking for a gaming device.
