Ridley Scott praises a Stanley Kubrick classic as predicting the dangers of AI

The director of Gladiator 2 is convinced that Stanley Kubrick hit the nail right on the head with ‘2001: A Space Odyssey” as a visionary masterpiece.

Artificial intelligence is here, and it’s here to stay. Creators from all types of sectors accept it reluctantly, but the majority of those who have expressed themselves do so with absolute rejection, filmmakers being some of the most prolific when it comes to positioning themselves. The most recent one has been Ridley Scott, who will soon return to movie theaters with one of the most anticipated movies of the year, ‘Gladiator 2′. In an interview, he did not hesitate to praise one of the best works of Stanley Kubrick which, according to him, was premonitory more than 50 years ago.

“I think Kubrick did a film that predetermines everything by 50 years with AI,” Scott said in an interview with Collider. “He did 2001: A Space Odyssey. 2001 is an act of genius because it warns us what happens if we allow AI into our universe. It will take over, and all it has to do is switch [cellphones] off, and you’ve got chaos. It could switch that off for fun. If I’m gonna design an AI, I’m gonna say, “Okay, the first job for you is I want you to design another AI smarter than you are.” By the time you’re done with that, we’re in deep shit.”

“I have to second that. It’s my favorite of his films,” agreed Paul Mescal -Lucio in ‘Gladiator 2′- during the joint interview.

Return to blood and sand this November

Meanwhile, in less than two weeks ‘Gladiator 2′, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2000 film, with Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, arrives in theaters. It will be released on November 15.

“Years after witnessing the death of the admired hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after witnessing the conquest of his home by the tyrannical emperors who rule Rome with a fist. of iron,” says the official synopsis. “With a heart overflowing with fury and the future of the empire at stake, Lucius must remember his past in search of the strength and honor that will restore the lost glory of Rome to the people.”
