Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom jacket during San Diego Comic Con hides secret Latverian messages
Latverian runes hidden throughout the costume reference justice, revenge, and Victor von Doom.
Over the weekend, Marvel Studios held its panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where new glimpses into the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were revealed, including the announcement of a new Black Panther, as well as the arrival of Ghost Rider in the near future. But before looking toward the future, attendees were treated to a new look at ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, in which Robert Downey Jr. not only returns but will also portray Doctor Doom.
It was during this presentation that the actor was seen wearing a very distinctive jacket, which featured several Latverian runes—on the sleeves, one of the right lapel, and the pockets, to name a few details. And although no mention was made of what they meant when the jacket was first revealed, someone—Grant DeArmitt of PopVerse—has already managed to decode the code fairly quickly, thanks to an activation that took place during SXSW London.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Jacket and Its Message
The campaign featured bags of “DOM Latveria Coffee,” on which runes replaced English letters in most cases. Obviously, there are some instances where certain words are spelled differently, but it was thanks to these letters that the secret message was deciphered. Among the words found were:
- THERE IS NO PROMISE OF TOMORRO (on his right lapel, the “w” might not be a letter in the Latverian alphabet)
- JUSTICE (front pocket fold)
- REVENGE (front pocket fold)
- TO THE VICTOR (right sleeve)
- GO THE SPOILS (left sleeve)
This last phrase may have a double meaning, since Doctor Doom’s real name is Victor. So far, not all the phrases have been deciphered, since the message located on the left side of the outfit, just above the breast pocket—which is somewhat obscured in the photos—cannot be fully deciphered.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ comes to theaters December 18.
