Rotten Tomatoes gives in to Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ and awards it the highest score of his career
Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ is now the British director’s highest-rated film on the Rotten Tomatoes aggregator. Will it hold up over time?
Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ is not only one of the biggest cinematic events of 2026, but it has also marked a major milestone in the British filmmaker’s filmography. Despite the controversies that have surrounded it even before its release—related to aspects such as its casting and costumes—once film critics were able to see the feature film in all its glory, they were won over by this latest adaptation of Homer’s epic poem. Such has been its impact that, at this moment, it is Nolan’s best film according to the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics have spoken: ‘The Odyssey’ is Christopher Nolan’s best film, according to Rotten Tomatoes
Although ‘The Odyssey’ hits theaters on July 17, 2026, several press screenings have been organized around the world ahead of its general release, allowing numerous specialized media outlets to publish their reviews of the highly anticipated film.
And the reception of this film isn’t all that different from what is, for all intents and purposes, a consensus among film critics from around the globe. As revealed on the ‘The Odyssey’ page on Rotten Tomatoes, Christopher Nolan’s ambitious film has become the highest-rated title in his entire filmography, with 96% positive reviews. Even the Oscar-winning ‘Oppenheimer’ (2023) ranks below ‘The Odyssey’ on this aggregator, as it has “only” 93% positive reviews. It’s worth noting, however, that this is a “snapshot” of the exact moment we published this news; as new reviews are added to the total tally, that percentage may go up or down.

According to many critics, Christopher Nolan’s well-known perfectionism has once again paid off in this feature film. ‘The Odyssey’ is not only the first major Hollywood narrative blockbuster shot entirely in 70 mm IMAX —which allows for an almost square aspect ratio and much higher resolution than other traditional formats—but the filming process itself has taken the cast to a multitude of exotic locations representing key points along Odysseus’s (Matt Damon) long journey home after the Trojan War. This commitment to delivering the highest image quality and filming on location has been one of the main highlights of ‘The Odyssey’.
