Ryan Gosling, Ken in ‘Barbie’, disappointed with the Oscars snub of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie

After the Oscar nominations revealed neither Margot Robbie or Greta Gerwig were recognized by the Academy, ‘Barbie’ co-star Ryan Gosling shares his disappointment at the situation.

The 2024 Oscar nominations have made their first headlines of the year: neither Margot Robbie or Greta Gerwig were among the nominees for best actress or best director respectively. ‘Barbie’ aspired to sweep the award ceremony, but in the end, it will compete for 8 statuettes compared to the 13 for Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s film. One those is the long-awaited nomination of Ryan Gosling, who will compete in the best supporting actor category. However, he has shared a statement in which he shows his disappointment that his film companions have not been selected.

Ryan Gosling: “there is no ‘Barbie’ movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie”

“I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films,” said Gosling. “And I never thought I’d being saying this, but I’m also incredible honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken. But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no ‘Barbie’ movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.”

He continued: “No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

The actor remembers that against all odds, soulless dolls have “made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history.” For this reason, “their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees.” That said, Gosling wanted to recognize “America Ferrera and the other incredible artists " who contributed to the creation of ‘Barbie’.

‘Barbie’ is a satire starring one of these dolls. Played by Margot Robbie, this Barbie discovers that her ideal world is cracking. Seeing everything you took for granted crumble, she has to travel to the real world, which will change her forever.
