Ryan Reynolds explains how he convinced Madonna to use 'Like a Prayer' in 'Deadpool & Wolverine'
A request that involved a personal visit to the artist.
‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ is a huge success at the worldwide box office, and Marvel Studios’ new movie has brought together two of the most popular actors in superhero movies. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, Deadpool & Wolverine, and a musical selection of great level that has managed to resurrect and put current groups like *NSYNC and artists like Madonna.
‘Like a Prayer’, one of the American artist’s most recognizable songs, was chosen in the trailer that introduced the public to the long-awaited movie, a song used in a prominent scene, but getting the artist’s permission was not easy, and Reynolds himself has explained how he managed to convince Madonna.
Ryan Reynolds and a story with Madonna
In an interview with host Andy Cohen on the SiriusXM radio platform, Ryan Reynolds spoke alongside Shawn Levy, the film’s director, and there he talked about the complex process of getting permission to use ‘Like a Prayer’ in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’. This involved a personal visit to Madonna herself, where they had to show the sequence of the movie in which the song would be used.
“Let’s preface it with the fact that they don’t license — that Madonna doesn’t just license the song, particularly that song. It was a big deal to ask for it and certainly a bigger deal to use it…,” Ryan Reynolds noted. Visiting her home and showing her how they wanted to use the song was like “meeting royalty,” according to Reynolds. Ultimately, the story had a happy ending, with Madonna signing over the rights, and according to Reynolds, the fact that the singer’s son was a big fan of the Deadpool movies may have made the process easier. Did the story end there? Far from it, Madonna herself was involved in the recording and the scene in which they used her song, giving indications that, according to the Canadian actor, were “excellent”.
