2026 may be the last year that the mythical Comic-Con will be held in San Diego, due to the high costs that the city’s hotels have reached.

San Diego Comic-Con threatens to leave town after 2026 due to high hotel costs

The legendary San Diego Comic-Con, one of the summer’s most popular entertainment and pop culture events, may leave town after 2026, organizers have announced.

According to the Mercury News, David Glanzer, Comic-Con’s chief communications and strategy officer, said Wednesday that while organizers decided to extend their contract with the San Diego Tourism Authority to keep the event in the city for another year, they were unwilling to sign the two-year deal sought by the city.

“In good faith we decided to sign this contract for one more year with the understanding we could meet our room block needs for 2026, but for 2025 we are still far below where we would want to be on our hotel rooms,” Glanzer said.

“We’ve said this a million times, we don’t want to leave but if it gets to a point where it’s too expensive for people to stay here, we’d have to look into that,” Glanzer said. “As much as we wouldn’t want to leave, never say never.”

Why would Comic-Con move from San Diego?

The main issue is the cost of hotels. Approximately 60 area hotels are responsible for providing lodging for the convention, which brings approximately 135,000 attendees to the city of San Diego for four days and fills the convention center. The Comic-Con team is looking for hotels to offer discounted room rates during the event, as the economic impact is felt not only in the bay and nearby hotels but also in other areas of the city. Without these special rates, and using the concept of supply and demand, hotels could charge stratospheric prices due to the high demand in the city.

San Diego Comic-Con 2024 will take place July 24-28 and will feature comics, collectibles, cosplay and more, as well as series and movie announcements including Transformers One, The Boys, The Rings of Power, Rick and Morty: The Anime, Star Trek, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Those About to Die, Like a Dragon: Yakuza, and many more.
