Scalpers are already flipping Magic: The Gathering’s Sonic collab for double the price
The Secret Lair Sonic Superdrop went live, and resellers wasted no time listing inflated bundles online.

Magic: The Gathering’s latest Secret Lair drop, featuring Sonic the Hedgehog, launched on July 14, and scalpers have already flooded resale platforms with marked-up listings. The collaboration includes three themed sets: Friends & Foes, Turbo Gear, and Chasing Adventure, each packed with Sonic-inspired card art and reimagined Magic staples.

What’s being scalped?
While the official Secret Lair site still lists some items as “low stock,” scalpers have jumped ahead with eBay listings that far exceed retail pricing:
- Turbo Gear Foil Edition
- MSRP: $39.99
- eBay listings: $70+ (preorder)
- Friends & Foes Foil Edition
- MSRP: $49.99
- eBay listings: $80+
- Full Sonic bundle (non-foil)
- MSRP: $99.99
- eBay listings: $349.99+
Some sellers are even listing “ORDER CONFIRMED” bundles before the cards have shipped, banking on scarcity and collector demand.
Why is this happening?
Secret Lair drops are limited-time releases, and while Wizards of the Coast implemented purchase limits (two per product per customer), the sets are not made to order. That means once inventory runs out, fans must turn to resellers, often at inflated prices.
This isn’t new. Previous drops like Final Fantasy and Monty Python sold out within hours, and scalpers have consistently targeted high-profile collaborations. The Sonic drop, while better stocked, still saw queues and rapid listings on resale sites.
What can fans do?
- Buy directly: As of now, some Sonic sets are still available at MagicSecretLair.com
- Avoid pre-shipment listings: Many eBay posts are speculative and may not fulfill orders promptly
- Wait for WPN store release: Non-foil versions of Friends & Foes will be available at select game stores starting August 21
Scalping continues to plague collectible card games, especially when drops are limited and themed around beloved franchises. While Wizards has improved queue systems and stock pacing, the Sonic Superdrop shows that demand, and resale exploitation, remain high.
