Seth MacFarlane, the creator of 'Family Guy,' talks about making a movie about the show and whether it's coming to an end

A cartoon that is television history and wants to stay on the air.

padre de familia

‘Family Guy’ is one of the most popular animated series in history. Created by Seth MacFarlane, the show was initially reminiscent of ‘The Simpsons’ because of its family theme, but it soon managed to differentiate itself with a very peculiar humor and iconic characters such as Peter Griffin, Lois, Meg, Chris, Stewie, the dog Brian and others like Quagmire or Cleveland, who even had his own series. Now, in 2024, ‘Family Guy’ is 25 years old, a quarter of a century, a figure that affects and reaffirms that the passage of time is inexorable.

After 22 seasons, the idea of a Family Guy movie is on Seth MacFarlane’s mind, as he pointed out at PaleyFest LA: “I’ve known for 15 years what the [Family Guy] movie was going to be, and I just haven’t had the time to get to it.” There are many projects that MacFarlane has been and continues to be involved in, but it should not be ruled out that a show that is 25 years old and has made television history will make it to the big screen in the future.

‘Family Guy’ plans to stay on the air for a long time

During an interview for the Los Angeles Times on the 25th anniversary of ‘Family Guy,’ Seth MacFarlane was asked if the show could go on for another 25 years, to which the renowned American creative responded that “at this point, I don’t see a good reason to stop. People still love it. It makes people happy and it funds some good causes. It’s a lot of extraneous cash that you can donate to Rainforest Trust and you can still go out to dinner that night. There was a time when I thought, it’s time to wrap it up. At this point, we’ve reached escape velocity. I don’t know that there’s any reason to stop at this point unless people get sick of it. Unless the numbers show that people just are, ‘Eh, we don’t care about Family Guy anymore.’ But that hasn’t happened yet.”

A quarter century on the air is something few entertainment products can claim. As its creator says, ‘Family Guy’ seems to be around for a while.
