Capcom

Shinji Mikami, creator of Dino Crisis, sees the series’ return as difficult due to Monster Hunter.

The most terrifying dinosaurs in the history of video games and a long-awaited return.

Shinji Mikami is one of the greatest legends of the video game industry, a figure of enormous relevance and linked to renowned sagas such as Resident Evil, The Evil Within or Dino Crisis, among many others. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Mikami confessed his surprise when asked about Dino Crisis and the existing desire for the saga’s return. The reason? According to Mikami, Capcom has already covered the dinosaur world in one of the most important sagas for the Japanese company.

“The awesomeness of dinosaurs and the stuff you can do with dinosaurs, that’s been kind of really nailed down by Monster Hunter in recent years. So even if I were to decide to make a remake or a new version of Dino Crisis, I don’t really feel like there’s a whole lot of space for that kind of game right now, just since Monster Hunter has become such a big game,” Shinji Mikami said in the interview.

Dino Crisis and the Wish for its Return

Shinji Mikami’s statements about Dino Crisis can be seen as logical, and it is true that dinosaurs and giant monsters are treated to excess in a saga as cutting-edge and prominent as Monster Hunter. In addition, a release like Exoprimal in July 2023 did not end up being as prominent as Capcom would have liked. That said, the approach of Dino Crisis is radically different, a survival horror in which dinosaurs are the big threat, and that with the work done in the remakes of old Resident Evil installments, gives to dream of a great return of Regina.

A total of three main installments, the first two were a great success and well differentiated from each other at a playable level, while the third, exclusive to Xbox, was the end of the saga by the strange proposal and a quality far from what Dino Crisis was used to. In addition, a spin-off as Dino Stalker, an off-rails shooter that could be played with the Light Gun on PlayStation 2.
