Co-creator Justin Marks confirms a 10-year narrative leap and new characters joining the FX epic.

Shogun Emmy 2024
Update:

Season 2 of Shogun is already on its way. The epic FX series based on feudal Japan will be returning very soon, and its creators have revealed new details about what we can expect in this sequel, including a 10-year narrative time jump.

During a presentation by Disney+ at Hong Kong Disneyland Resorts, co-creator and executive producer Justin Marks gave more details about what we can expect in the new season (via Variety). Part 2 is, I would say two things,“ Marks said. ”Like the first season, I think part two is a really sweeping, beautiful and you’re never going to see it coming, entirely unexpected love story. It’s also a story of war and the cost of war. There are battle sequences that we’re putting together now in part two. I don’t think you’ve ever seen anything like this kind of scale, this kind of tragedy and this kind of humanity."

With that comes the time jump, which Marks mentions goes hand in hand with the current changes in production, but which allows us to “see what’s changed in their lives over the course of the last 10 years.” “This show is going to take us a little while to produce. It’s not coming out a year later, and there’s this thing that drives me crazy when you watch a show that ended three years ago, and you get into season two and it’s like five minutes later,” Marks explained. “We’re trying to use this jump as a way to come back to our characters again for the very first time, to see them, to see what’s changed in their lives over the course of the last 10 years, and to rediscover them.”

A new cast will bring the series to life

Due to a time jump, some characters will not be appearing in this season. New cast members include Asami Mizukawa (Aya), Masataka Kubota (Hyūga), Sho Kaneta (Hidenobu), Takaaki Enoki (Lord Ito) and Jun Kunimura (Gōda). Dentro del reparto que regresa, tendremos a Hiroyuki Sanada (Lord Toranaga) and Cosmo Jarvis (John Blackthorne), junto con Fumi Nikaidô (Ochiba), Shinnosuke Abe (Buntaro), Hiroto Kanai (Omi), Yoriko Dôguchi (Kiri), Tommy Bastow (Alvito), Yuko Miyamoto (Gin), Eita Okuno (Saeki) and Yuka Kouri (Kiku).

“We killed a lot of people,” in the first season, Marks continued. “We have some really exciting characters this season, characters that I want to tell you everything about, but cannot. These faces really popped for us, so we’re just so excited to bring our own family together with these new faces and watch them become part of this world.”
