Shrek 5 now has a release date, but we'll have to wait until 2026

Some… body just told me that Shrek is coming back, but they never mentioned that we had to wait so long.

It’s been a few years since we last saw Shrek, Fiona and Donkey in theaters, but today DreamWorks has finally announced the triumphant return of the franchise, along with a date that, despite their social media post to the contrary, is Too Far, Far Away.

Shrek 5 already has a release date

Through its social media, DreamWorks Animation announced that ‘Shrek 5′ will arrive on July 1, 2026, with the return of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, who will return to give new voice to the characters we met in 2001.

The existence of the film has been teased for some time, with Eddie Murphy mentioning in an interview with Collider last month that they were already working on two movies, ‘Shrek 5′ and a ‘Donkey spin-off’. “We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago,” Murphy said. “I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie].”

A very, very long wait

By the time ‘Shrek 5′ hits theaters, it will have been 16 years since the last green ogre movie, ‘Shrek Forever After’, which was released in May 2010. Rumors of a sequel date back to 2016, always with the intention of bringing back the original cast. While we haven’t seen any action from these characters, we did recently see the release of another spin-off with 2022′s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which was well-received by critics and has helped spur the return of the main franchise.

For now, there are no details about the plot of Shrek 5, so we can only wait and see what happens.
