Shrek 5 to take much longer to reach theaters, Dreamworks confirms new delay to 2027

Universal and Dreamworks Animation have announced another delay for the highly anticipated sequel.

Update:

Announced since 2024, our favorite green ogre, Shrek, doesn’t seem to want to get out of the swamp. This afternoon, it was announced that the fifth installment of the franchise would be delayed once again, now going all the way to 2027.

According to Variety, Universal and DreamWorks Animation announced that Shrek 5 is moving its release date from December 23, 2026, to June 30, 2027. The film was originally planned to be released in July 2026, but it suffered its first delay in February this year. For now, the reason behind this delay has not been mentioned, considering that the film already had its first teaser earlier this year. In light of this change, an as-yet-untitled film, known only as Illumination’s Untitled Event Film, moved up its release to April 16, 2027.

With this new release date, Shrek 5 will face Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (which was also recently delayed due to “creative reasons”) that week. Previously, it would have had to compete against other major releases, such as Ice Age 6 and Avengers: Doomsday.

The long wait for Shrek to return to cinemas

But what’s another 6 more months of waiting when the last installment, ‘Shrek Forever After’ was released in 2010. Rumors of a fifth installment had been ringing since 2016, but it wasn’t until July 2024 that it was finally made official after several rumors. While no details on the storyline have been released yet, it was previously announced that the original voice actors would return to this sequel, with Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona.
