Shuhei Yoshida is one of the most influential figures in the entire history of PlayStation. Although he is no longer as closely associated with the brand as he once was, his comments continue to carry significant weight among both fans and within the industry itself, given his prolific career. Recently, the former Japanese executive reflected on the future of Xbox with a comment that quickly sparked debate: Yoshida believes the brand won’t disappear as such, but will eventually be absorbed by Windows.

Xbox as an ecosystem, not just a console: Shuhei Yoshida’s thoughts on Microsoft’s future in video games

When Shuhei Yoshida talks about Xbox, he doesn’t do so from the perspective of just another “spectator”; his words carry special weight. Not only was he one of the most recognizable faces of PlayStation for decades, but he also played an active role in some of the most pivotal moments of the commercial battle between Sony and Microsoft. As the former president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Yoshida experienced several generations of the so-called “console war” firsthand, so his perspective on the industry’s evolution is often seen as that of someone who knows both PlayStation’s strengths and those of its main rival intimately.

Recently, Yoshida posted a message on his personal X account that was as succinct as it was clear: “XBOX will dissolve into Windows, and it’s MS’s strength.” It’s a grim assessment of the industry, but one that aligns with what other experts in the field are already saying: that years of questionable decisions by Microsoft in the gaming space have only accelerated its exit from the market in the traditional sense of the term. The former PlayStation executive does not believe that Xbox will simply vanish from the map, but rather that it will be integrated under the Microsoft umbrella as just another service, like Office or Teams.

Several users who have responded to Yoshida’s post point out that this personal opinion carries more weight not because of what it says—which remains relevant—but because of when it was posted. The post came just a couple of days after one of the harshest yet most transparent communications from Xbox in its recent history. In an open letter from the company signed by its new CEO Asha Sharma and her second-in-command Matt Booty, both executives revealed that the brand must take a whole series of measures and reevaluate its priorities if it intends to keep the Xbox ship afloat.

Be that as it may, the console war is far from over. For now, the future of Xbox will be shaped by the actions the brand takes under Asha Sharma’s leadership, and much of its success will depend on fulfilling many of the requests that die-hard fans have been calling for for years, such as a return to traditional physical formats or the return of exclusives. In any case, Yoshida’s words should not be interpreted as ill will toward the former rival company, but simply as one of the possible futures for Microsoft’s gaming division. After all, bigger towers have fallen: just ask Sega.
