Sigourney Weaver speaks out about the controversial ‘Alien 3’ and calls the situation “idiotic”

Legendary star Sigourney Weaver knows where things went wrong during production of ‘Alien 3′, claiming a lack of support from the studio.

Alien’ is one of those sagas that, despite having millions of fans, also has many controversial installments, which could be practically all of them except the original one, ‘Alien’. Of course, one of them is ‘Alien 3′, which brings together many detractors around it despite coming from the also divisive ‘Aliens’. Now, 34 years after its release, Sigourney Weaver, the now legendary Lieutenant Ripley, has explained what she believes are the reasons why it was received with such mixed opinions.

Weaver talks about ‘Alien 3′ more than 30 years later

“I could feel that David had to get on the phone and fight every day for us to shoot what he wanted to the next day,” explains the veteran actress in an interview with Deadline. “And I’m sorry that he didn’t get a chance to make the script his own before we started. That makes filmmaking very difficult …”

“I recall that Vincent Ward’s original script had been about monks in a monastery and Ripley was in a coma for half of it. So, I keenly felt the lack of studio support. That was a transition moment when studios stopped being about “let’s make great films” and started being about “let’s not lose money.” They had the great idea to put David Fincher aboard for his first film, but then not to support the guy was very idiotic.

“I heard recently that David has disowned the project and I’m sorry about that because I loved working with him, and I think we made a good film. I’m glad he got a chance to do his version. It was a great ensemble,” she concluded.

Today, with ‘Alien 3′ the same thing happens as with dozens or hundreds of films with some controversy, and that is that it is considered a cult film. It won’t be long before we see ‘Prometheus’ elevated to that status - if it is not already - or even for ‘Alien Covenant’, which will be even ignored completely when writing the script for ‘Alien Earth’, the next series based on the saga that Ridley Scott created more than 40 years ago.
