The Simpsons executive producer calms fans about Marge Simpson’s ‘demise’: “will probably never be dead ever again”
Canon in The Simpsons? Matt Selman’s response after Marge’s controversial death.

Last weekend, ‘The Simpsons’ community raised a ruckus over the season 36 finale episode Estranger Things. In the episode aired on May 18, Marge Simpson dies. Although the idea of the death of a major character of America’s favorite yellow family sounds like hard news, it actually happened in a flash-forward episode. In light of this, Matt Selman, executive producer of The Simpsons, has spoken out about it, reminding fans of a very important detail of this long-running cartoon: “‘The Simpsons’ doesn’t even have canon!”
During an interview with Variety, Selman mentioned that one of the important aspects of the episodes being a glimpse into the future is that they are “all speculative fantasies.” Hey, even Marge finally has a romance with Ringo Starr!

“Obviously since the ‘The Simpsons’ future episodes are all speculative fantasies, they’re all different every time,” Selman said. “Marge will probably never be dead ever again. The only place Marge is dead is in one future episode that aired six weeks ago. I guess this speaks to the fact that people care about Marge. At the end of the day, it’s probably good for business even when these ridiculous, misleading stories go viral!”
Death in The Simpsons
Although Selman mentions that there is no canon in The Simpsons, throughout the 36 seasons we have had to say goodbye to a considerable number of characters for different reasons. From salary disputes, as was the case with Maude Flanders, to the sad death of their voice actors, as in the case of Edna Krabappel, having to some extent some consistency in the narrative.
However, since this is an episode from the future, it is not something that affects the current continuity, so we will see more of Marge in the following seasons.
