Solasta II looks to appeal to Dungeons & Dragons fans at Steam Next Fest

The Steam Next Fest kicks off next week, from February 24 to March 3. During these days, users of Valve’s platform will be able to access demos and try out upcoming games. Among them is Solasta II, the long-awaited sequel to the Dungeons & Dragons-inspired tactical role-playing game. The title was unveiled during The Game Awards 2024, and ahead of the launch of its demo, French studio Tactical Adventures gave us a preview of what players can expect from the upcoming release.

What is Solasta II?

As its name suggests, this is the second part of the saga after Solasta: Crown of the Magister, which was released in 2021 for PC, Xbox series and PlayStation 5. The original title managed to build a community of 1.6 million players from its Kickstarter campaign to the launch of its 1.0 version.

With Solasta II, the studio seeks to improve its offering with a renovation of its graphics engine, moving from Unity to Unreal Engine 5, and a more refined game system. Major enhancements include changes to the narrative, character design, and progression system, where player decisions will have a greater impact on how the story unfolds.

What does the Solasta II demo offer on Steam Next Fest?

During the presentation we attended, we were able to see the beginning of the game. The story of Solasta II takes place in the same world as its predecessor, but on a completely new continent called Neokos. Here, players will control a group of four pre-selected adventurers made up of classic fantasy races - humans, dwarves, elves, and halflings - who begin their journey in the city of Tor Wen in search of a friend.

The demo lasts approximately two hours and allows you to test key elements of the game, including exploration, investigation, dialog options, and tactical combat.

Playing with dice

As with any game based on Dungeons & Dragons, dice rolls are a crucial element of the experience. Each character has abilities that give them advantages or disadvantages in different situations, from conversations to combat attacks, adding a degree of randomness that is characteristic of the genre.

Speaking of combat, during the demo we saw a battle against giant crabs in a tactical grid environment. The design is reminiscent of titles like XCOM or Fire Emblem, emphasizing strategy in every move.

Visually, Solasta II takes advantage of the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5 to deliver detailed environments and impressive effects for attacks and spells. The game allows you to switch between the four characters in a 3D world with well-crafted textures and high-quality cinematics. Although not too many scenarios were shown in the demo, the ones we saw stood out for their level of detail and ambience.

Solasta II is expected to be available for early access in late 2025.
