Sony Pictures

Sony is officially killing off its Spider-Man villain universe after ‘Kraven the Hunter’

While Venom was relatively successful for Sony Pictures, movies like Morbius and Madame Web have caused the company to kill off its plans for the universe.

Marvel Sony Spider-Man Venom

Sony Pictures has not achieved the expected results with its particular Marvel Cinematographic Universe focused on Spider-Man villains. And despite the fact that the first installment of ‘Venom’ exceeded the 850 million dollars collection, the rest of the films from this peculiar universe of characters related to Spider-Man without Spider-Man have not become profitable for the company, especially ‘Morbius’ and ‘Madame Web’ and their resounding critical and box office failures. Now, and just before the premiere of ‘Kraven the Hunter’, it seems that Sony is shelving its own spider universe to focus on what is really profitable: Spider-Man.

Goodbye to the universe of Spider-Man villains without Spider-Man

Thus, and as reported by the media The Wrap, Sony Pictures has decided to shelve its Marvel arachnid universe after the imminent premiere of ‘Kraven the Hunter’ in cinemas on December 13. In this way, the film starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be the last in this series of villain films, since starting in 2025 Sony Pictures will focus solely on the figure of Spider-Man through different projects already underway, such as the animated film ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’, the series ‘Spider-Man Noir’ with Nicolas Cage and ‘Spider-Man 4′ together with Marvel Studios and Tom Holland.

After years of losses and bad reviews, Sony finally surrenders to a universe that has not finished working beyond the box office success of the first ‘Venom’ and its more than 850 million dollars. Let us remember that ‘Venom: There Will Be Carnage’ barely exceeded 500 million dollars, while ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ just closed your passing through movie theaters with little more than 470 million dollars of revenue.

Cases like those of ‘Morbius’ and his 167 million dollars and ‘Madame Web’ with just 100 million dollars -who could not even cover the production costs- were the most bleeding; We will see how the general public and critics react to ‘Kraven the Hunter’ and its marked adult and violent tone. Maybe we are facing the opportunity that has been waiting for so long for Marvel Studios to incorporate the mythical villains of Spider-Man and other characters associated with the wall-crawler in the MCU after ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’?
