Sony ULT Field 3: real power in a compact body

A simple design with the power you need.

The Sony ULT Field 3 comes with a clear promise: to deliver real power in a compact body designed to accompany you anywhere. With a robust design, surprisingly rich sound, and seemingly endless battery life, this speaker aims to be your go-to portable option for everything. But does it really deliver?

Design

The Sony ULT Field 3 is a compact speaker that is quite easy to describe. With dimensions of 256 x 113 x 79 mm, it has a minimalist design that looks quite sturdy, but weighs just over 1 kg, allowing you to carry it with one hand without it feeling fragile. The Sony logo with an iridescent effect is located on the front right side.

Its side speakers have an interesting appearance, with a concave inlet covered with fairly hard plastic. At the top, we find the power, Bluetooth, connection, play/pause buttons, volume buttons, and the ULT button, which activates the mode that gives this series its name. Next to the buttons, there are also two removable rubber covers that give access to buckles for attaching the strap that allows you to hang the speaker.

Finally, on the back, we find another rubber cover that hides the slot for accessing the USB-C port for charging the device, as well as a button that, when pressed lightly, allows us to see the remaining battery charge percentage or activate battery care mode.

Added to this is its IP67 protection against water and dust, making it a product that we can use both at home and outdoors without really worrying about anything happening to it.

Sound

In terms of sound, the Sony ULT Field 3 performs quite well. Inside, it has a 20 mm tweeter and an 86 x 46 mm woofer. After the first indoor sound tests, I found that even at low volume, it fills rooms very well. The audio remains loud and clear, even when the volume is turned up. Yes, it was a device that I could leave in the dining room at the entrance to my apartment and enjoy without any problems while I was in my kitchen. To this we must also add the ULT effect, which helps to give that extra power in the bass, and boy, does it do it well.

Although somewhat limited in options, it connects to the Sony Sound Connect app, which allows us to adjust some of the settings on the speaker. We have the option of using DJ controls and adding additional sounds to our music, or even playing with the equalizer. The app also allows us to access other options such as the battery. However, even with the equalizer, we cannot modify the bass if it is in ULT mode.

In this regard, the speaker could offer a few more options to help define certain aspects of the songs, but that’s just nitpicking. Ultimately, it performs well considering its size.

Connection

Something that really caught my attention when testing this device was its Bluetooth connection. Even at a distance of about 10 meters, the connection between the speaker and the smartphone never had any interruptions. However, don’t expect miracles. Changing floors or moving too far away from the speaker will cause a disconnection, which is normal. On the other hand, the device also has the option of connecting to other Ult Field speakers to create a network of mini speakers thanks to Party Connect, allowing you to connect up to 100 speakers.

Battery

One of the features that also stands out about the Sony ULT Field 3 is its battery life. Its battery has a long life, lasting around 24 hours. Although I wasn’t listening to music all the time, I did get almost a week’s worth of use out of the device, with it finally running out over the weekend.

It certainly has very good battery life, and it even doubles as a power bank thanks to its USB-C port. On the other hand, the device has fast charging, thanks to the USB it comes with, giving you about 2 hours of music with 10 minutes of charging.

Conclusion

The Sony ULT Field 3 is a portable speaker that stands out for its overall robustness. Its durable design, good sound power, enhanced bass in ULT mode, excellent battery life, and impressive Bluetooth connectivity make it a reliable companion for virtually any scenario. It's not the most customizable option in its range, and certain settings are limited when ULT mode is active, but it still offers a balanced and competent experience.
