Sony wants to compete with Nintendo Switch and is already working on a new handheld console to run PS5 games
The hardware is at an early stage of development and is not expected to be released in the near future.
The success of the Nintendo Switch has revived interest in portable consoles. After the failure of the PS Vita, Sony withdrew from this market, but it has already taken the first steps to return. According to Bloomberg’s Takashi Mochizuki and Debby Wu, the Japanese company is developing a new portable console that will run PS5 games. The source, who asked not to be identified, confirmed that PlayStation intends to compete with Nintendo and other potential rivals, such as Microsoft. The Redmond-based company is known to be working on prototypes for portable hardware, although if it is commercialized it will take time to arrive.
The release of Sony’s new handheld is not guaranteed
Everything seems to indicate that Sony’s next handheld is still years away, if ever. The source claims that the product is in the early stages of development, so the company could still back out. The truth is that PS Portal was designed with the idea that it could be a kind of Steam Deck, but that concept was discarded for the current one, that is, for a device designed to play in streaming. A few days ago, the company launched an update that allows PS Plus Premium subscribers to play a catalog of 120 games without using the PS5.
Bloomberg reached out to Sony, but the company declined to comment either way. For some time now, PlayStation has been looking to diversify its production and bring its games to the PC. The mobile market is also a possible source of expansion, and the Japanese have confirmed their intention to take advantage of these market opportunities.
