‘South Park’ is returning to Paramount Plus after agreeing to a $1.5 billion five-year deal
Trey Parker and Matt Stone ink five-year pact for global streaming rights, marking a major shift in the animated series’ future.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of 'South Park’, have reached a landmark $1.5 billion streaming deal with Paramount Global, securing the global rights to their long-running animated series. The five-year agreement, valued at $300 million annually, will bring 'South Park’ to Paramount+, marking a strategic shift away from its previous home on HBO Max.
What’s included in the deal?
- Global streaming rights for all 'South Park’ episodes
- Exclusive U.S. availability on Paramount+ for regular episodes
- New content pipeline for Paramount+ specials and future seasons
- Production extension for Comedy Central through 2027
This deal follows the expiration of HBO Max’s streaming rights and comes amid a broader industry shakeup, including Paramount’s pending merger with Skydance Media.
Behind the scenes drama
The agreement wasn’t without tension. Parker and Stone publicly criticized Paramount’s handling of negotiations, accusing incoming president Jeff Shell of interfering with talks involving Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery. The duo even issued a statement via the official 'South Park’ account:
“This merger is a shit show and it’s f***ing up 'South Park’. We are at the studio working on new episodes and we hope the fans get to see them somehow.”
Despite the friction, the deal was finalized just ahead of the Season 27 premiere on July 23, which had been delayed due to the merger fallout.
Premiering in 1997, 'South Park’ has evolved from crude cutout animation into a cultural institution. This new deal not only makes Parker and Stone billion-dollar players in the streaming wars, it also positions Paramount+ as a serious contender in the adult animation space.
