Spider-Man wreaks havoc in perennial Magic: The Gathering card price war
Magic: The Gathering’s long-awaited Spider-Man set has sparked controversy among players for its troubling pricing policy for this type of product.
Magic: The Gathering’s new Spider-Man set has caused quite a stir, not only because of the hype surrounding the cards inspired by the iconic Marvel superhero, but also because of the high prices they are fetching. Apart from the usual - and exorbitant - increases on the parallel resale market, this case has attracted attention because these very high prices are already affecting new and sealed products sold directly in stores. This controversial pricing strategy, driven directly by Wizards of the Coast, reinforces a recent trend in the franchise: collaborative sets under the Universes Beyond/Multiverse Beyond label - such as Lord of the Rings, Fallout or Assassin’s Creed - come with a significant price premium that has sparked criticism from players.
Spider-Man Comes to Magic... With Prices That Would Scare Venom Himself
Magic: The Gathering’s Spider-Man set has generated a lot of excitement among players who expect to see cards inspired not only by Marvel’s beloved superhero, but also by some of his villains, such as the iconic Venom, Green Goblin, and Doctor Octopus. A new look at Wizards of the Coast’s official website has revealed their pricing strategy for these types of collaborations, so much of the excitement has been overshadowed by the high prices associated with this release.
Predictably, the resale market has already begun to inflate prices to exaggerated levels, but the new and sealed products being offered in stores are also quite high. For example, the 30 pack with 14 cards per pack is selling for $209.70, which is a significant premium over other standard sets in the franchise. This upward price trend is nothing new, but it is even more surprising in this case due to the high interest in the Spider-Man collaboration.
In addition to the standard box, there are other products in the set that are also notable for their price. Below are some of the items announced for this release, along with their official retail prices:
- Magic: The Gathering - Marvel’s Spider-Man - Box of 30 Booster (14 Cards per Pack): $209.70
- Magic: The Gathering - Marvel’s Spider-Man - Spidey’s Spectacular Showdown (includes six cards that make up a mosaic and three booster packs from the set): $41.99
- Magic: The Gathering - Marvel’s Spider-Man: $69.99
- Magic: The Gathering - Marvel’s Spider-Man Booster Box (contains twelve booster packs): Price to be announced.
All of these items will be released on September 26, 2025, making it clear that the sales strategy is to capitalize on the excitement as the release date approaches.
What has been more controversial among players is that, despite the high prices, the cards do not represent major changes in design or playability. Instead of offering completely original cards, the cards in the Spider-Man set are retrains: that is, they replicate the effects of cards that already exist in Magic: The Gathering, but with new names, artwork, and themes inspired by the Spider-Man universe.
