Split Fiction hides a sneaky easter egg from Dark Souls and it’s just what you’d expect, but not easy to find
Josef Fares' new work is a creative waste full of winks to many games and movies. Of course, From Software’s work could not miss the party.
It is not the Dark Souls of cooperative games, but a strong candidate for GOTY 2025. Split Fiction, the new game by Josef Fares (‘Brothers’, ‘A Way Out’, ‘It Takes Two’) is a success thanks to a thrilling gameplay, a real parade of ideas and mechanics and, if that wasn’t enough, the creative’s decision to pay homage to all kinds of works: Super Mario Bros., Final Fantasy VII, Donkey Kong, Halo... and yes, Dark Souls. Hidetaka Miyazaki’s beloved series of painful, but satisfying games that are everywhere. Of course, finding this easter egg is not exactly easy, so if you have not discovered it during your game, here are the indications to get to it.
Split Fiction’s wink to Dark Souls
Whether you’ve beaten the game or haven’t started it yet, you should know that there’s nothing missable in Josef Fares’ Split Fiction, as you can select chapter from the menu, access a specific section, and even the side quests you’ve discovered. That said, to find the Dark Souls easter egg you have to play chapter 4, specifically in a part called Test Chambers.
In this area there is a long corridor in which both players must use the blue and red colored weapons to operate mechanical arms that move the platforms to jump on. Well, about halfway down the hallway, if instead of continuing in a straight line you look to the side, you will see a huge gate that you can open if you shoot the locks. On the other side of the gate is the sphere that gives access to the side quest Moon Market, and inside it is the nod to Dark Souls. This video by youtuber JunGuidres shows the specific area.
Once inside the Moon Market side mission we must find three ghostly cats that have escaped from the main square. From the market we can take three different paths: one to the left and two to the right. Well, to get to the cave where the wink to Dark Souls is located you have to go through the one that is closest to the door blocked by those cat-shaped locks, to the right of the potion stall. You can’t miss it and as soon as you peek into the area you’ll see just what you’ve been waiting for: a Dark Souls bonfire! Humanity restored!
By the way, remember that Split Fiction has a friend pass, so if only one person buys it, they can invite a friend so they can both play without having to pay for a second copy. Here are all the details so that the second player can play for free.
