Square Enix surprised fans with The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales; a retro-style HD-2D action RPG
Announced during the July 2025 Nintendo Direct, the game blends classic 90s action with modern visuals and is now playable via a free demo.

Square Enix has unveiled The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, a brand-new HD-2D action RPG coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026. Revealed as a surprise closing announcement during the latest Nintendo Direct, the game marks a bold shift for the HD-2D engine, previously used in turn-based titles like Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy, by embracing real-time combat and co-op gameplay.
What’s the game about?
Set in the kingdom of Huther, protected by a magical barrier, the story follows Elliot, a young adventurer, and his fairy companion Faie as they explore ancient ruins and battle beast tribes across the continent of Philabeldia.
- Seven weapon types: swords, bows, chains, sickles, and more
- Magicite system: crystals that enhance weapons and unlock new combat styles
- Co-op mode: Faie can be controlled by a second player or toggled in single-player
- HD-2D visuals: pixel art meets dynamic lighting and layered environments
Demo now available
A free demo launched on July 31, 2025, via the Nintendo eShop for Switch 2. It showcases exploration and combat mechanics, and includes optional online analytics to help Square Enix refine gameplay.
- File size: 3.4 GB
- Modes: TV, tabletop, handheld
- Players: 1–2 local
- Languages: English, Spanish, Japanese, and more
Note: Save data from the demo will not carry over to the final release.
Development and future plans
Developed by Claytechworks (Bravely Default II), the game is part of Square Enix’s push to expand HD-2D beyond turn-based RPGs. A post-demo survey will gather player feedback to shape the final version.
