‘Star Wars Ahsoka’ is over: questions and a new era for the galaxy

The period between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens is an almost blank canvas. The fall of the Galactic Empire was followed by a period of instability, driven by the fragility of the fledgling New Republic, still threatened by Imperial remnants. The end of Star Wars: Ahsoka placed the pieces on the chessboard and opened the doors to a fascinating period.

From this point on, there will be spoilers for episode 8 of Ahsoka.

What happens at the end of ‘Ahsoka’ and why it’s important for the future of Star Wars.

Grand Admiral Thrawn has achieved his goal. Thanks to his alliance with the Nightsisters, he was able to get Morgan Elsbeth to set in motion a plan to reach the former Imperial officer’s place of exile in a galaxy far, far away. In “Rebels,” Jedi Ezra Bridger sacrificed himself to transport the Chiss to that remote area, leaving them both trapped.

In the final episode, Ezra barely escapes and boards Thrawn’s ship, while Sabine Wren and Ahsoka Tano remain on Peridea in the company of Huyang. Shin Hati and Baylan Sköll also remain: the apprentice joins the scavengers while her master explores the hidden mysteries of the planet.

It has not been announced if there will be a second season of ‘Ahsoka’, but it is clear that the story will continue in some form or another. Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice seems to have turned over a new leaf and accepted her fate on Peridea. At the same time, Grand Admiral Thrawn has returned to the galaxy, leading to a conflict between the Imperial remnants and the New Republic. The Nightsisters will repopulate Dathomir, and Stormtrooper zombies are already a reality.

Ezra returns with a very clear message: Thrawn is already here. Dave Filoni already anticipated that this villain, born in the novels of the nineties and re-canonized after the purchase by Disney, would be the great antagonist of this era. It is true that many elements have been taken from the Expanded Universe, so it is possible that we will see fragments of Heir to the Empire, although the new canon tells its own story.
