‘Star Wars: Andor’ Season 2 is bringing back two beloved ‘Rogue One’ characters
Lucasfilm has revealed a release window for the next season of ‘Star Wars: Andor’, as well as more detail on returning characters.
The spark of the Rebellion has been lit. In the time of the Galactic Empire, Darth Sidious reigns and rules without any resistance. The Jedi Order has fallen and the Senate serves the new emperor, although not everyone is willing to allow themselves to be crushed. Cassian Andor and his group of rebels have begun a series of operations to destabilize the tyrant, something that is narrated in the first season of ‘Star Wars: Andor’ and will continue in the new episodes, scheduled for 2025. The prequel to ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ will bring back two key characters from the film: Orson Krennic and K-2SO.
Who are Krennic and K-2SO
When ‘Andor’ arrived on Disney+, many wondered if Orson Krennic would make an appearance. However, showrunner Tony Gilroy made it clear that the director in charge of the Heavenly Power project—the Death Star project—would not be in the first 12 episodes of the series. The Lucasfilm production has not yet concluded, so there were possibilities that it could be seen in the second season. During D23 2024, Disney’s annual fan event, the company announced that Ben Mendelsohn will return to play the character.
In addition to ‘Rogue One’, director Krennic appears in several novels such as ‘Catalyst: a Rogue One Novel’, by writer James Luceno (author of ‘Darth Plagueis’, an excellent book about Darth Sidious’ master, although no longer part of the official continuity). Timothy Zhan, one of the most prominent ‘Star Wars’ authors since the nineties, introduced Krennic in his new trilogy dedicated to Grand Admiral Thrawn. He is an ambitious and power-hungry man, who tries by all means to gain credit with the emperor. For this reason, in the film he confronts Moff Tarkin, who ends up taking the project away from him.
K-2SO is a reprogrammed Imperial security droid, meaning he now works for the Rebellion. Played by Alan Tudyk, the character will make his triumphant return in the second season of ‘Star Wars: Andor’. How did he end up in the ranks of the rebels? Perhaps we will see it in the new episodes, which will span several years and will reach the beginning of ‘Rogue One’.
The next ‘Star Wars’ series to premiere on Disney+ is ‘Skeleton Crew’. The first two episodes will be available starting December 4. Then ‘Andor’ season 2 will release at some point of 2025. A year later ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ will premiere in theaters, the big screen debut of the characters from the award-winning series.
