Star Wars

‘Star Wars: Lando’ is still coming, with Donald Glover hoping for it to have a fun tone

The Lando-focused Star Wars spin-off has had a long production process, but it’s far from canceled. And now its main star is hoping for it to leave the franchise’s seriousness behind.

The future of some ‘Star Wars’ productions is uncertain. Lucasfilm tends to announce multiple projects before the scripts are even written, which is why numerous productions end up in limbo or are canceled. An example of this is Rian Johnson’s film trilogy or Taika Waititi’s movie, which do not seem like they will materialize in the short or medium term, if they ever do. The ‘Star Wars Lando’ series was revealed years ago and since then everything has been promises and hopes. One of the latest news is that it’s no longer a series, but a movie. Donald Glover played the younger version of Lando Calrissian in ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ and will return - if everything goes well - in this production. And he’s got some ideas about what he wants to contribute to the saga.

Star Wars Lando seeks fun

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, the actor stated that he intends to provide a more relaxed tone. “I just want it to be fun. As a ‘Star Wars’ fan myself, I think it’s important that there needs to be fun being had. It’s very hard to have fun right now. It’s tough because there are very serious things happening! And those are the only things that connect us, really… So I get why things are serious, but part of the human experience, I believe, is we have a responsibility to have enjoyment. And I just feel like we’re lacking in that department.”

Glover explained that although he loves Star Wars, sometimes it is “too serious,” so he wants to capture a different tone in his product: “Everything that has to do with the Skywalkers is so serious. [With] Lando, I think the best part about him is he’s a scoundrel. And I feel like people can relate to that, and he’s probably like ‘Man, this war is whack. I need money,’ which I feel everyone can relate to. I want to bring fun to ‘Star Wars.’ I just want it to be fun.”

‘Star Wars Lando’ does not have a release date yet. The next film in the saga is ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’, arriving in May 2025.
