Ubisoft

Star Wars Outlaws will let players turn off yellow paint and hints

Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws is aiming to not be part of the “Yellow Paint” conversation by giving players the option to turn off the hints with a new gameplay mode.

Star Wars Outlaws

Yellow paint. The bane of gamers all over the world. Or so social media would make you believe, as ever since the navigational aid technique has popularized itself in recent games, numerous users fight against the mechanic as they feel it trivializes gameplay and ruins immersion in the games it appears. From Assassin’s Creed to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and all the way to God of War Ragnarok, these strips of paint in the world that would guide players through the correct routes seemed to be here to stay.

The controversy is such that now Ubisoft has proudly announced that their upcoming open world game, Star Wars Outlaws, will include an “Explorer Mode” feature that completely turns off “guiding color on core navigational elements.” Or what is the same, it deletes yellow paint from the world to leave players to find their own way through the game.

Giving players the choice of guidance

This “Explorer Mode” is nothing new for Ubisoft games, as it’s been present in recent Assassin’s Creed games, but it appears as though the mode has been expanded further in Star Wars Outlaws to make the title much more enjoyable for those that do not wish to have any guidance whatsoever while playing the game.

Ubisoft has actually been one of the few AAA studios that has consistently offered players the option of turning off guidance, going much further than just paint: their quest descriptions and objectives are built in with locations, landmarks, and coordinates in mind so as to allow players to find their way instead of following a dotted line, missions have been designed to be much more open ended, with less hand holding, and of course, the player aid in the form of colorful indicators has been toned down.

Other reports point towards the option being touted before launch due to Outlaws actually having this type of guidance abundantly when playing without the feature, from climbable surfaces to “critical path ledges”, and all sorts of places around the world. Will you use ‘Explorer Mode’ to save yourself from the yellow paint, or are you comfortable with a more guided experience?
