‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ and the mystery of At Attin: this is the crown jewel of the Old Republic

‘Skeleton Crew’, the newest Star Wars series on Disney+, opened up with an intriguing mystery surrounding the home planet of its protagonists.

Star Wars Tripulación Perdida

In the times of the Old Republic, the Jedi fought against the Sith Empire and defeated it. Darth Bane established the Rule of Two and the order vanished, waiting to exact its revenge. During the final stage of the High Republic, an era of light and splendor, the Sith began to infiltrate the Republic in a sibylline way, without the Jedi realizing the threat that loomed over the galaxy. Then, Sheev Palpatine seized his opportunity, manipulated the Senate, and was elected Supreme Chancellor. He overthrew the Republic and established the Galactic Empire, until the Rebel Alliance won the civil war and restored it. And what does the planet At Attin have to do with all this? Its mystery has been revealed in the first two episodes of ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’, at least in part.

At Attin, the crown jewel of the Old Republic

Wim dreams of adventures and is obsessed with the Jedi. He enjoys seeing images of his heroes fighting evil Sith, something that was common in the time of the Old Republic. At At Attin, children study and are educated to do the Great Work, although what exactly it consists of has not yet been clarified. All inhabitants take an exam that qualifies them to play a specific role in society, a specific profession that they carry out throughout their lives. It is suggested that there is a certain hierarchy, since Fern’s mother points out that only a few manage to access the best positions. The intriguing thing about it all is that its inhabitants seem to believe that they still live in the Old Republic.

One of the clearest signs that this is so is that it is prohibited to enter or leave the planet. In other words, they are isolated from the rest of the galaxy and know nothing of the fall of the Republic, the advent of the Galactic Empire, and the subsequent restoration of the New Republic. Therefore, when the child protagonists find a ship and travel to space, no one seems to know where At Attin is. In fact, they stop to refuel in a dangerous place infested with pirates and everyone talks about the planet as a place of legend, where a fantastic treasure is kept. The kids don’t understand their fascination because they consider At Attin the most boring place they can imagine. As if that were not enough, Wim has credits from the Old Republic in his hands, more valuable than current money by the looks of it.

There are questions to be answered, surely the isolation of At Attin will respond to some type of plan deployed a long time ago, but what reasons support it? Will it make sense so many centuries later? We will have to see the next episodes, every Wednesday on Disney+.
