Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has so much Goonies DNA, the producers wanted its stars for the show

The new spin-off of ‘The Mandalorian’ is a tribute to the adventure films of the eighties. Since ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ was announced, the name ‘The Goonies’ has been the preferred tag accompanying the headlines in many of the series’ news stories. In this new series, the protagonists are a group of children who live in a residential neighborhood of At Attin, a planet that was once the crown jewel of the Old Republic. Together they will live great adventures full of mysteries, with the peculiarity that they will travel through the galaxy far, far away by accident. The curious thing about the matter is that Lucasfilm even considered the possibility of hiring the protagonists of ‘The Goonies’ as adults.

John Watts, showrunner of ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’, acknowledged in an interview with ComicBook that the idea ran through their heads: “We’ve talked about it as a potential casting idea. Should we find some of the kids who were in those movies and cast them as adult characters? But it wasn’t enough to really move forward with the idea, although there is an opportunity here.” For example, one of the series that follows in the wake of ‘E.T.’ and ‘The Goonies’, ‘Stranger Things’ did do something similar: Sean Astin (Mikey in ‘The Goonies) appeared in the second season playing Bob Newby.

Will there be a second season of ‘Skeleton Crew?

Those responsible for the series have mentioned that they have ideas to follow the story of the protagonists, although the story arc of the first season is a complete deal and stand-alone. As they have stated, they would like to see the children grow up, something that ‘Star Wars’ has never reflected in live action, unlike ‘Harry Potter’. Whether or not there is a second season - at the moment, nothing official - ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ premieres on December 4 on Disney+ with its first two episodes.
