‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu’ had strong box office numbers in its opening weekend, but they weren’t enough for the franchise

The latest Star Wars film, ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’, has wrapped up its first weekend since its release, marking the franchise’s first release since 2019’s highly divisive ‘The Rise of Skywalker’. The adventure that began over the past seven years on Disney+ and brought live-action Star Wars to the small screen has finally made its way to the big screen, grossing an estimated $165 million worldwide, with $102 million coming from the domestic box office and $63 million internationally.
Was ‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu’ a successful box office debut? Unfortunately, Din Djarin and Grogu’s adventure didn’t fare too well at the box office. By comparison, ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ grossed $103 million domestically during its four-day Memorial Day weekend in 2018, making the new film the worst Star Wars opening since Disney acquired the franchise.
All is not lost for ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’
However, there is good news for Din and Grogu. Unlike the Han Solo prequel, which ended up losing money at the time, ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ have a major ace up their sleeve: its low production cost. It’s worth noting that this film cost only $165 million to produce, and barring whatever the marketing budget was, it might just break even. With a positive reception from fans—though not so much from critics—and with several weeks still left in theaters, there’s still a chance they’ll turn a profit.
