‘Star Wars’: this is why Darth Vader built his fortress in the place of his biggest defeat
Mustafar was almost Darth Vader’s tomb, but he still chose to build his personal fortress on the fiery planet. This is why.
Anakin Skywalker falls to the dark side and Darth Sidious orders him to go to the Jedi Temple to kill all the members of the order within its walls, including the children. He then travels to Mustafar with the goal of eliminating the Trade Federation separatists. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan Kenobi pays a visit to Padmé Amidala and informs her that her husband has succumbed and committed unforgivable crimes. The senator follows Anakin and arrives at the volcanic planet, unaware that Kenobi has stowed away on her ship. The rest of the story is well known: Master and apprentice duel and Skywalker falls defeated on the brink of death. until his new master rescues him, and then he chooses Mustafar as his new home. But why?
Darth Sidious suggests that Vader build his fortress on Naboo or Tatooine, but the Sith opts for Mustafar. Beyond the symbolism, the choice is due to the fact that under the burning fire of the planet lies a powerful connection to the dark side. In the distant past, a temple of the Sith Order was erected there, although by the time of the Galactic Empire it had already disappeared. The cave remained, however, a source of darkness and the resting place of the consciousness of Darth Momin, an artist, sculptor, and architect of the Sith.
The resurrection of a Sith
According to the comic ‘Darth Vader: Dark Lord’, by Charles Soule, Momin’s mask is an artifact that allows anyone who puts it on to be possessed by the ancient Sith. Vader then decides to use one of the Sith Lord’s designs to build his own castle. As might be expected, Lord Momin also has his own plans and waits for the right moment to rise from the ashes. Vader manages to open the portal to the dark side, at which point Momin recovers his body and comes back to life. A fight ensues between the two Sith, which leaves Darth Vader badly injured. However, he manages to kill him with a stone slab and close the portal.
Since then, Darth Vader used the fortress as a residence. It has been seen in some live-action productions such as the ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ series and ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, as well as in certain comics and novels. But what happened to Darth Momin’s mask? It became part of Palpatine’s collection. Upon Vader’s death, the fortress was left in ruins, guarded by Alazmec cultists. Ben Solo, Anakin’s grandson, visited Mustafar after falling to the dark side and becoming Kylo Ren.
